Whenever I send a message i get the following error

'Sending of the message failed'

The problem is exactly this.

my smtp server uses a completely different username and password combination then my IMAP.

I cannot save the password in password manager. I cannot set the SMTP password anywhere within TB.

No matter what i try i cannot get a password challenge from TB to enter in the authentication information.

have you set the correct username for the SMTP server in Thunderbird?

Right click the account in the folder pane and select settings Scroll to the bottom of the account list and select outgoing server (SMTP) Edit the settings to include the correct user name.

Now when Thunderbird sends you will be promoted for the password as their is none for that account and username.

Great Suggestion but it did not work. Was never presented with a challenge.

I do not know if this helps but i downgraded to version 1.* I was able to configure smtp settings as anticipated.

I attempted to save the password. and then re-install a newer version. This however did not work. the new TB did not notice the saved passwords in the password manager.

Other things that i have attempted.

Wipe profile (did not work) complete re-install (did not work) downgrade (did not work) upgrade (did not work) save passwords in password manager(did not work) Reconfig smpt settings (did not work) tested on other email client (worked as anticipated)

Hope this information helps

The password storage location has changed since V1, so I guess the conversion poutines got dropped somewhere in the last 40 or so versions.

You have an unconventional SMTP set-up. I presume you have bought a domain and your webhost is providing your incoming email. I'd want to check with smtp.com about the outward settings. I can't say that port 80 is wrong, but it's most unusual. I'd have expected 25, 587 or preferably 465. And given what they offer, smtp.com must be able to support your use of your own email address when sending.

THey are correct.

What i dont feel is being understood here is everything WAS WORKING and had been for months since i set this solution up.

Upon the last update and computer restart it just stopped working.

I cannot get it to challenge me for a username password combo. and there is no way for me to define a password for the outgoing server.

This is a flaw in I-face design and implementation.

I cannot even find reference to SMTP server in saved password file within the specific users profile. Only IMAP settings are located there.

Could i just insert the information as wrong information and when the username and password challenge fails from the saved settings could i then re-input the correct ones and have them saved.

I don't understand the "assembling message" text. I can't recall ever seeing this when using Thunderbird, yet you don't have any add-ons that might modify its behaviour.

I'd have said just remove all references to the offending password/identity from the password manager and it should prompt you. There are fault conditions under which this doesn't happen, and removing and reinstalling the affected account usually fixes this.

But on the latest builds of Thunderbird you can now double-click on the username or password in the password manager and edit them in situ. Please use the filter at the top to discover all pertinent entries.

Messages are assembled into the nsemail.HTML in the temp folder prior to sending. I have never seen the message, but then things happen in my temp folder in a flash, unlike those of people with Avast where it locks out sending mail entirely because it is playing with that file.

That Thunderbird is not even getting to the point of trying to send the mail (which is what I think is happening.) It might be you have a new variant on the Avast thing which is causing mail to never get out of your temp folder to be sent.
