Why must I refresh Firefox every day to week because it constantly stops downloading?

For about the last six months, Firefox regularly stops downloading. I have to Refresh it to get it to download again. Sometimes the downloading will function correctly for a week or more; sometimes it only functions correctly for one day. This is a huge inconvenience and is making me rely increasingly on Chrome, though I prefer Firefox.

Hello,

The Refresh feature (called "Reset" in older Firefox versions) can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your bookmarks, history, passwords, cookies, and other essential information.

Note: When you use this feature, you will lose any extensions, toolbar customizations, and some preferences. See the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article for more information.

To Refresh Firefox:

  1. Open the Troubleshooting Information page using one of these methods:
    • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information. A new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
    • If you're unable to access the Help menu, type about:support in your address bar to bring up the Troubleshooting Information page.
  2. At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Refresh Firefox" ("Reset Firefox" in older Firefox versions). Click on it.
  3. Firefox will close. After the refresh process is completed, Firefox will show a window with the information that is imported.
  4. Click Finish and Firefox will reopen.

Did this fix the problem? Please report back to us!

Thank you.

What security software do you have?

If you use cleanup software like CCleaner then check the settings for the Firefox application.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

The first reply simply told me how to refresh Firefox--a process I am all too familiar with (as should be clear to anyone who read my original post).

Regarding the second suggestion re. the security software, I do not use CCleaner. I have the free version of AVG antivirus and run the free Malwarebyte occasionally. The next time Mozilla stops downloading, I'll try the safe-mode boot, but I'm somewhat dubious. If this is the cause of the problem, why does it occur intermittently--why not all the time since AVG runs all the time?
