That is only possible if the Password Manager is disabled or if you use Private Browsing mode as in PB mode you can't store a new password. Another possibility is to open the about:preferences#security page in a pinned tab to have easy access to the checkbox to toggle the Password Manager.

• Options/Preferences -> Security: Logins: [X] "Remember logins for sites"

You can also use an extension to toggle the signon.rememberSignons pref that is controlling the "Remember logins for sites" setting.

Thank you for your reply cor-el, but I haven't been able to have FF do what I want it to do without causing me additional steps every time I login to a website.

At times using Private Browsing mode has been problematic (i.e. sites that require accepting cookies) so rather than using PB mode I keep the box requesting that the history is cleared when FF is closed. I also run FF in a a sandboxie sandbox so I presume I'm getting all the benefits of using Private Browsing without the problems. (note: When I make changes to the settings I do that outside of the sandbox)

Since I only want FF to be able to automatically put in a password for two out of the hundred sites I go to that require passwords I prefer not having to check anything every time I manually enter the passwords for those hundreds of sites ... whether or not doing something is as easy as going to a pinned tab.  

As for disabling Password Manager (PM), maybe I don't understand what you're suggesting. The steps I took to do that didn't seem to work. What I did is enable PM to enter the login info for the two sites in "saved logins", then I disabled PM so it wouldn't ask me what I wanted to do every time I went to a website. But when I went to the login page of either of the two websites that I wanted FF to put the login info in to I didn't see any way to have FF do that.

I'm probably not making myself very clear. I apologize for that.

If "Remember logins for sites" has a checkmark then the Password Manager is enabled can can be used to fill name and password on a web page. Firefox will also offer to store or update a password when the password manager is this way enabled. If "Remember logins for sites" doesn't have a tick then the Password Manager is disabled and can't fill login data or save new data.

Note that there is the signon.autofillForms pref on about:config to disable auto-filling a password field.

Thank you for the additional help. I understand you to be saying that (1) when the Password Manager (PM) is enabled that it will auto-fill the log-in information on those webpages for which it has the info and (2) for pages that it doesn't have the info it will offer to store or update the info.

I have been running FF with PM disabled. What I was asking is whether there's a way for me to get "(1)" without having to deal with "(2)." I find "(2)" to be a very annoying distraction.

If I understand you correctly I can't have it both ways. If I want "(1)" then I must accept "(2)" or forget about using FF PM. Do I have that right?

The only way to have both ways is to use Private Browsing mode to visit web page that have a login form. In a Private Browsing mode tab/window you can use the Password Manager to fill username and password, but you can save a a new login in PB mode.

In normal mode the only option is to have the Password Manager disabled and only enable it to visit (login) website where you want to use the Password Manager to fill login data.

You can use an extension to get Private Browsing mode support per tab.

When PB is enabled cookies aren't accepted. That blocked me from logging into this FF account. But to my surprise (and embarrassment) 'without having "Always Use PB mode" checked I was still able to get PM to login on the website that I wanted it to,

The embarrassment is because it turns out that I didn't know how to activate PM to automatically enter the login info. Today I happened to right click when the cursor was in the login window; I was surprised to see an option to use PM. I never noticed that before. So for whatever reason PM did what I wanted it to do without PB enabled. Time will tell if there will be any ramifications from this configuration. If there are I'll try the extension you suggest. Otherwise I consider my question answered and will mark it such. Thank you again for your time and patience.

I have a similar thing:

I want: a. Firefox to save 1/one log in/sign in entry only. Google account b. Firefox to autofill that, when I click on 'Sign in' on the Google home page within Firefox c. to use another password manager to log in to other sites/forums.

Reason for this is that due to the introduction of webextension, my password manager (Roboform) can not autofill the Google Sign In fields. I can solve that by disabling javascript in About:config (Javascript Enabled=False) but then again other matters do not work properly anymore - such as upload files button on websites.

The only workaround I found is to save the Google Sign In user-id/pw within Firefox passwords (password protected of course) and use that to sign in.

However, as said, I don't want to use Firefox password for any other site, so I don't want this pop-up each and every time.

Any ideas?
