Why does the trash in email automatically delete itself?
For a number of months, items that have been moved into trash disappear completely. For example, now I only have a partial list for "April" and nothing before or since and I haven't "emptied trash". How can this be reset please ? Thank you,

Er, why are you deleting things you wish to keep?
It's crazy stupid to try to keep things in the Trash folder.
I would like to decide when the trash is cleaned out, not some automatic thing that Mozilla sets. I had an email in the in box, I clicked on it by mistake and put it in the trash, when I went into the trash immediately, it was not there. How come? I only have trash for one week going back, then a few from April, nothing for May and June. Can you explain that?

If you are using IMAP then retention is over ridden by what the server decides based on the policies implemented there. It has nothing to do with Mozilla. Or Thunderbird. Note Mozilla and Thunderbird are not the same thing.

No idea as you have provided no information about how you have configured your account.

Nope because as I said you have provided no information.
