Thunderbird is completely garbled after latest update to 52.4.0

Ubuntu 17.10 - Thunderbird 52.4.0

After yesterdays update Thunderbird paints erratically. Everything is completely messed up and the program is unusable. The screenshot shows an example.

I have tried this both with Wayland and X and the same thing happens.

Until the update Thunderbird was working fine.

Thunderbird 52.4.0 isn't available yet from mozilla.org. That probably means you're using the Thunderbird version provided by your distribution, and you also got an update provided by your distribution. So you should ask in an Ubuntu forum.
