I have 3 thunderbird address lists I want to combine so that I can eliminate addresses which appear in all the lists and use just one address book so that addressees don't receive more than one copy of the message?

Ctrl+a will select all. Then you can transfer them all in one drag-and-drop operation.
You may well need an add-on to tidy up any duplicates.

You can drag and drop contacts between message lists.
Thank you. But is there a way to merge whole address lists rather than individual addresses?
