Installed Thunderbird, configured email account - next time I started Thunderbird, no email account or messages?!
Today I installed T/b, configured an email account and downloaded my messages and folders. When I started T/b again later, there were no email accounts and no messages?

Are you using Avast! software? If so, please have a look at this question.
It seems it may just have taken Tb a long time to import my messages - all showing up now.
