in-box marked is always marked read as soon as mail is down loaded

I'm running Thunderbird/3.1.2 on a windows 7 laptop. All my incoming mail is marked read as soon as it arrives even though there are no boxes checked. How do I fix this so the in-box is marked unread until I actually click on a message?
