The security "golden lock icon" can no longer be seen. I want it back.
Prior to FF4 installation, when I entered a secure site to make payments or purchases, a small icon (a gold lock) appeared and I was reassured that my info was secure. It is no longer there and I do not feel comfortable in proceeding. Is there anyway I can get it back or, at least, an acceptable alternative ???

The whole status bar was redesigned, so now you use the area to the left of the address (green, blue, or plain) to check whether the site is secure.

Other discussions about this change mention an add-on you can use if you really prefer seeing a lock:

I have also now adopted the suggestion re the icon recovery, in addition to that in the first reply. Thanks to both responses, I am now doubly confident. That was the "good news" - the "bad news" is that I now must go back to paying my bills.
It's just a pity that more effort wasn't made when FF4 was launched to inform people of such a radical change. It is far from intuitive, and the advice from most providers of secure services is to "look out for the padlock". i.e. it is considered to be an industry-wide standard.
What about everything else that was on the status bar? Add-ons and extended settings and things... How do I get them back?
There is an Add-ons bar for the icons/menus associated with add-ons. If that is not displayed, use View > Toolbars or right-click on a blank area after the address box or the "+" (new tab) button or in blank area on the tab bar to choose it from the toolbar list.
However, if you prefer the Status Bar, someone created an add-on for that.

I haven't tried it myself.

I have FF4 and there is no indication to the left of the address with regard to secure status. I have to click on a website's icon to the left of the address to find out if it's secure or not. There's nothing visual (like the lock symbol) that appears automatically. I would like for Firefox to remedy this if possible. Thank you.
@jameswife99, you should see a colored bar when the site is using a valid security certificate (blue or green). If there's only a "favicon" on a white background, then it is not a secure site. If that isn't working correctly, perhaps an add-on has changed its behavior???
To add a lock in that area, try the add-on: Padlock :: Add-ons for Firefox. Does that show up, for example, on this site when you're logged in?
