My new tab window used to show lots of useful stuff but now it is completely blank.

When I open a new tab the window doesn't show the useful stuff it used to like recenly opened windows, favourites etc.

A blank page is the default when opening a new tab. You probably have a add-on installed that changed that action, and now that add-on is disabled due to lack of "compatibility" with Firefox 5.

Open the Add-ons Manager tab and see what extensions are disabled.
