Downloaded the update 6 times or so. Everything goes down as usual until the restart. I get FF5 open and a window that tries to connect to the update server forever. (actually, I let it go for a couple hours before closing it) Everyday it wants me to update to 6.0, your site warns me that I'm running an insecure version, to update, yet the update refuses to work. What is wrong?

If there are problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version.

Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

  • Uninstall your current Firefox version.
  • Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

Thanks cor-el. Worked like a charm. That solution was suggested but no mention was made that bookmarks and passwords and what not could be retained. Thanks again!

I know it's dumb - but how do I uninstall a previous version? (I'm computer illiterate). I am using 3.6.19 at present and have downloaded 6.0.1 several times when told by my screen that I amusing an old version and should update. However the icon won't drag into my applications folder and I seem to still be using 3.6.19.

Grateful for advice on how to handle this.

I assume that you are on a Mac?

If you have problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.

Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop

  • Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
  • Install the new version that you have downloaded

Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data.
