New tab keeps edit history instead of having none

I recently upgraded from 3.6 to 8. Basically, in older versions if you middle clicked somewhere in your history or when the back/front button, it'd open a new tab with no history tired to the link. Now when doing this it copies the history as well. Is there an option to set it so it DOESN'T retain the history? (I see an add on to make it keep it, and the fact some reviews are pretty new make me wonder if this was changed in FF8?

I guess a lot of people like keeping the history but I really don't.
