No discernable pattern. Have followed all instructions on crashes page to no avail. Was unable to update the Silverlight plugin...all I get is a Microsoft page that says "One moment, please, while the current Silverlight installation status is determined..." but then nothing more happens. Have also been experiencing kernel panics when using Firefox since the crashes began...on a machine that had no prior history of kernel panics

Hey FirefoxDan,

Have you tried starting Firefox in Safe Mode? Hold down "shift" while Firefox is starting up. If the crash doesn't happen in Safe Mode, you should read Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems.

There is also a lot of useful stuff in the Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly) Knowledge Base article. If you've recently upgraded, you might want to check out this article as well.

Hopefully this helps!

I did try Safe Mode and still experienced a crash. I tried everything in the Knowledge Base article you cite...that was where I followed the instructions to make my initial post here.
