Bookmarks lost after upgrade to ver 22
I upgraded from ver 21 to 22 on Win7 on two computers. My bookmarks have disappeared on both machines. I tried restoring from a cloud backup and they are not there. I restored them from an old computer running an earlier version but still nothing appears when I go to the Bookmarks menu.
When I try to bookmark a page still nothing appears in my bookmarks when I go the menu option (ie Menu - Bookmarks - Show all bookmarks.
It appears that the bookmarks system has been corrupted.

Problems with bookmarks and history not working properly can be caused by a corrupted places.sqlite database file.
You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.
No luck.
I tried moving places.sqlite to places.sqlite.corrupted and restarting Firefox as instructed. I am able to create local bookmarks but syncing from the cloud to my Firefox has not restored my bookmarks. It has restored my browsing history, passwords and extensions, but no bookmarks are showing up.
I have tried downgrading to version 21 and this didn't help either.
Do you have JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups that you can use to restore the bookmarks from?
I've tried that - both from the "Import and Backup" menu and also from "Choose file". Nothing appears in my bookmarks Library window. I enclose a screenshot for evidence.
BTW - those two links are giving error message "ERROR The requested URL could not be retrieved"

You did remove all places files before trying to restore a JSON backup?
Did you try older backups (there should be 10 JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder)?
I tried both options. There are still no bookmarks visible in the Library window.
I set up a new Windows user account and tried to restore bookmarks - no joy.
This must be a FF22 bug.
Did you look in the Bookmarks Menu folder in the Library, in addition to the Bookmarks Toolbar folder?
Yes - nothing there.
[a few edits later . . .]
I have managed to restore my bookmarks by backing them up as HTML on a machine with an old version of FF on it - they don't restore perfectly but its easy to fix it. They do appear to sync properly though I'll need to look at this a bit longer.
It still appears as if something is definitely not right here - I'm not able to restore my bookmarks from the cloud. I don't think I'll mark this as fixed yet.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Creating a profile":
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.
I almost have the same problem with bookmarks. I had a system crash and went from Win XP to Win 7 and Firefox Ver 18 to 22. After moving all my bookmarks show but only half have Urls and I cannot add any bookmarks. Is there a limit in 22? How do I get all my bookmarks active?
You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.
My bookmarks were deleted with upgrades to both version 21 and 22 and I did everything that was stated above and nothing....both of those updates actually deleted my profile and I was unable to retrieve it from a backup. When I did finally retrieve the old profile it was immediately overwritten with the current settings thus again deleting all of my profiles info.....
I decided to go back to version 18 because that was the last good working version of firefox. Everything is back and working like a charm. I think someone who is familiar with the source code should look into these problems. To me there is no use upgrading if the product does not work.
I went back to 18 and it works better than 22.
It does not work so I went back to 18.
