Is that in the sidebar (View > Sidebar)?
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
- Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
All these programs have free versions.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

having followed the trouble shooting instructions a box appears asking [are you sure] asking me if i wish to leave the page or stay. either option makes no difference, but it seems to stop any reset from happening.
Try to rename (or delete) the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox profile folder.
- Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost and you will have to recreate them (make a note or bookmark them if possible).
Clear the cache and the cookies:
- Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"
- Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Creating a profile":
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem.

hello aceg, you can press f12 to bring up the developer console - on the top left click on its settings icon, which will provide you with an option to disable javascript temporarily (see screenshot). this should allow you to navigate away from the site in question. afterwards restart the browser once & make sure to run a scan with some of the tools already recommended above (in particular malwarebytes & adwcleaner).
