Have had a lot of issues lately with Firefox. Running windows 8 and FF27. Been using this setup for several years with no issues. The program response had slowed down greatly recently. I tried closing and restarting the program, finally I realized that FF was running in background and did not start up as an app/program. Clicking on the icon gave the usual indication that it was starting up but the screen never appeared. Checking the task manager I found the program running in the background, more than once had I tried to start it more than once.

Uninstalled and reinstalled FF27. Now the background issue is gone, it starts up as an app again in the foreground. Pinned shortcut to task bar. The shortcut starts the program up with no issues and at the same time creates a 2nd icon on the task bar next to the shortcut. Starting FF again adds another icon to the one on the right (icons are slightly misaligned so you know two programs are open). I have only ever had one icon on the taskbar with the program running. Multiple icons that overlap indicating more than one window is open I understand, that is no problem. But why is a second icon added when I start the first window? Deleting the shortcut icon closes down the program.

Hi Noakes, Your question is: "But why is a second icon added when I start the first window? Deleting the shortcut icon closes the program"

This will happen if you have two installations of Firefox. When you see both icons, pull up the Task Manager from the Control Panel and see if Firefox.exe comes up twice. You can also check to see if the shortcut that is pinned to the task bar is just a webpage shortcut, a hint for this will be if you try to create a shortcut on the desk top the default program for desktop browser shortcuts are also the Firefox icon.

I also do not know if you are using Windows 8 touch or not, but there was a bug in FFfor metro that allowed there to be pinned tiles, but this has been discontinued. I hope this helps.

First, there are not two installations of Firefox. I checked the control panel with it running and there is only one, checked the background section too.

The icon on the task bar was put there from reverse clicking on the desktop shortcut and using the 'pin on taskbar' option. Just deleted the taskbar icon and redid it -- same result. The target for the desktop shortcut is c:\programfiles(x86)\mozilla...
