Is there any way to make Mozilla Firefox automatically rename downloaded files of the same name like on Google Chrome?

When using Google, if I download two files named "unknown" it will save the second as unknown (1) and so on and so forth however when I use FireFix and I attempt to download two files with the same name I will have to type a new file name out and its quit annoying.

Is FireFox just lame like this or is there a work around / fix?

Hi Socks, how Firefox handles downloads varies based on your settings.

Firefox will add (number) to the file name when the file is automatically saved to a specific folder every time. On the Options page:

If Firefox is set to ask you to choose a folder, or if you use a "Save [something] As..." command to call up the file browsing dialog, then Windows blocks you from using a duplicate file name in the selected folder.

Does that match how yours works?

Is FireFox just lame like this . . .

If you download more than one file with the same filename, any browser could have issues. One thing you could try is to right-click the download link and select Save As.

Firefox only renames the files if you aren't using the "Ask" option in Options/Preferences and let Firefox save the files to the default download location. When "Ask" is selected then you will have to rename the files yourself to prevent replacing an existing file.

this could use an extension or something

it would be useful, if say filetype X saves in "directory a", filetype Y saves in "ask each time"

eg, txt files always go in downloads directory (and prompt if name is the same), whereas media files will save to "specified directory, and name will be given (2) extension if it is the same"

edit - this would need to apply to tools > page info > media > file > save as
