Unknown files being downloaded when I open a webpage.
I and my friends are pure gamers. So when I wanted to see keyboard assignment for a certain game, a file by the name 'latest' started to auto download when I clicked on a link at Google search result and by a mistake I pressed save. I deleted the file knowing that I didn't want the file. Will someone please tell me what is going on behind the scenes? I used to use Free Download Manager previously but because of increasing number of such unknown downloads, I had to uninstall it. Also FDM tried to connect to an unknown source in Romania, apparently.(I hope the last bit of info was useful. )

Sorry, no idea what is going on. Clicking a link and downloading a unknown file type can with out opening it be painful.
As for the FDM if you go to the Extension page you downloaded that from their is a Link to Report such things. Which would be helpful to others to not experience the same and for Mozilla to review the extension.
As you are running a beta, anything can and will happen.
Please use more than 1 scanner as each uses diff tech :
Save your Report and google each before deleting anything as do not want to delete something you need, If need help :

As I told in my question, I did not want the download. It just started as soon as I clicked on a link. Even agreeing that I use a beta, does this means that file which was about to get downloaded a malware or something? Because my OS, web browser and anti-virus auto-update. See the first item in the Downloads list on the screen shot.

Yes saw the 1st. A direct download link I can make in 20secs and upload, post and have it indexed by google in about 30mins. That is not the issue here.
If you did not want the download then should not have clicked on it. If the file is big enough you can go to the Download Icon and cancel the Download.
So, what is it you would like in point form please.
When scanning for Malware use Malware Scanners not A/V programs.
If need help, delete/uninstall any cracked programs and Torrent clients then ask the pros for help.

Hmm, we could only guess what happened. You might need to retrace your steps.
Google might have given you a direct link to the file, or the page you went to might have "pushed" the download using a script immediately after the page loaded.
If you want to know the source URL of the downloaded file, you can right-click it on the list and Copy Download Link. Not sure that would help sort it out.
Pkshadow, thanks for trying to help me, but first of all, I clicked on a link, not a download link. Does this mean that some sites try to force malware on us in this manner?

It apparently came from nocookie.net. When I searched about the site on Google, it is responsible for hosting and serving images images and files for all the Wikia pages.
I have opened Wikia pages before but never encountered this sort of download, so I'm just a bit freaked out.
