I turned on Sync on a computer that does not connect to the cloud. I have since disabled it. However, history and bookmarks are cleared and I can't add to them. Also the url of the site I am on does not always display in the menu slot.

You will have to go to the Firefox profile folder and delete the places.sqlite file like I posted above in the second part of this reply.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync (temporarily) while performing maintenance/repair efforts to the places.sqlite database.

You cannot imagine how meaningless "You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder. " is to me. I don't see the word "profile" or "places.sqlite" on any dropdowns.

BTW - I discontinued Sync, uninstalled Firefox and uploaded a new Firefox. Sync is not selected. All the problems remain.

You can install the Places Maintenance extension.

You can click its Options/Preferences button in "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" to run a check. You may have to close and restart Firefox if requested.

If that didn't help then you need to go to the Firefox profile folder and delete all places files in it to make Firefox create a new file.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

(I am using Safari to send you this.) On the Place Maintenance pop-up screen, I checked "Check Integrity" & "Check Coherence" and pressed execute. The Messages Log reads "Executing maintenance tasks..." It's been like this for more than 15 minutes. Should I continue to wait?

Do you know if you have a lot of bookmarks or keep a large history?

If it takes that long then you either keep a lot of history and bookmarks or there is a problem with the places.sqlite that the PM extension can't handle. If that is the case then your only option is to remove the places.sqlite file(s) manually and let Firefox rebuild the bookmarks from a JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

Less than 100 bookmarks, but I believe they are long gone. I did try to restore, but when I click on "Show All Bookmarks" absolutely nothing happens - no dropdown, nothing.

Current Firefox releases show the number of bookmarks including separators in the file name of the JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder in the xxxx part, so you can check if there is a backup that your bookmarks.

I don't know where to begin to access that. Recreating my bookmarks is the least of my problems.

Nothing on the Bookmarks dropdown menu works. I can't save a bookmark. I generate no history.

I need to sign off. Thanks for trying to help.
