Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>

I followed the instructions provided by Fred McD, but I have to admit this seems like a strange way to get a solution.

This usually means either that you have corrupted files in the cache or the server has been taken down for maintenance and you may have to wait until it works again.

You didn't tell us your computer system, or Firefox. Also, some add-ons are known to cause problems. This way, we see most of the information.

Ghostery is one of them. Please disable it as a test.

?? I followed the instructions to the letter: [Instruction set 1] Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>

(Mac Options) key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there? [YES]

[Instruction set 2] Type about:support in the address bar and press Enter. Under the main banner, press the button; Copy Text To Clipboard.. Then in the reply box at the bottom of this page, do a right click in the box and select Paste. This will show us your system details. [I did exactly the above and if the details weren't there, the instructions weren't sufficient.]

Please let me know exactly what I should have done differently.

Not sure about corrupted files in the cache; if they are there how would I eliminate them?

The server on the other end is not down; I did find a back door way to get the desired information but it is less satisfactory. The site in question is HPWREN. I am trying to access images through this link: http://hpwren.ucsd.edu/cameras/CNM.html Normally I would see images from the cameras. Now, however, I see a list of links. (Image of link page uploaded.) If I click on any link, I get the Error 403 no access message. Example: http://hpwren.ucsd.edu/anim-a2/cnm-z1-nw/cnm-z1-nw.html HOWEVER: If I go to the HPWREN homepage and thence to Sensors: http://hpwren.ucsd.edu/cameras/ I can see images from the various cameras. If I then click on an image, I can access the same information that was previously off limits; now the final form is jpg instead of html: http://hpwren.ucsd.edu/cameras/L/cnm-z1-nw.jpg

The bad news here is that this workaround is far less convenient. I can create a shortcut to each jpeg page, and they can be refreshed, but it would be far easier to be able to access any and all cameras via the one master page as I have been able to do for years (until this week.)

I tried http://hpwren.ucsd.edu/cameras/CNM.html The page loaded, but I noticed several pictures were not loaded. When I tried to access the pictures or any links, I get;

Forbidden You don't have permission to access /anim-a2/cnm-z3-s/cnm-z3-s-175.jpg on this server.

This is a problem at the web site.

When you posted originally, it seems Chrome was identifying your OS as Windows 8.1, but then your Firefox system information says Windows 7. I don't know whether it is relevant to your problem, but just in case...

Do you have Firefox set to run with a "compatibility" setting? You can check and turn that off by right-clicking your Firefox desktop shortcut, Properties, then the Compatibility tab. To make sure Firefox takes full advantage of Windows 8.1, uncheck/deselect all options on this tab. Then exit Firefox and start it up again.

Thanks, Fred. I thought maybe it was on my end.

BTW, I tried to report the problem to the HPWREN project through the "contact us" link. After filling out a form and hitting "Send" here's the totally ambiguous message that came on the screen: “Could not send the message. Information submitted” ?? If the message could not be sent, how and to whom was any information submitted? What information?

The plot thickens...

Anyhow, at least I still have my workaround.

more options

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) to see if that has effect.

Hmmm... Thanks for the information. I am running Win7; I avoid Win8 and Win8.1 like the plague; PITA. Likewise I have never knowingly run Chrome and don't intend to. Another PITA. Under "Compatibility," all boxes are unchecked (no boxes are checked).

Oops, I get Chrome and Safari confused. The user agent string in Question Details > More System Details mentions both. Or is that incorrect and you actually posted using Firefox?

more options

I use Firefox only. I'm not even sure what Safari is. \;-P

It appears that the automated system details detection program* needs a bit of work.

How is your Firefox detected on my test page here (it's the part in red):

https://jeffersonscher.com/res/jstest.php

If you reload the page using Ctrl+Shift+r, is it stable or does it change? Just wondering whether you have some kind of user-agent shifting software.

Meanwhile, the suggestions for testing by:

(1) Disabling the Ghostery extension (2) Starting Windows in Safe Mode with Networking

seem like logical things to try next.

Since another poster had the same problem on the site I can't access properly, I agree with him that the problem is in the site, not my computer. As far as the Firefox test goes, it is now a moot point.
