HI,

I have TB on my PC. I have now bought a lap top and would like to duplicate my TB a/c (and Firefox!) onto the laptop. I installed TB onto laptop, but when I tried to load it I get a message saying "Your Thunderbird profile cannot be loaded, may be missing or inaccessible"

Help!!

Thanks Richard

I installed TB onto laptop

Can you explain in more detail what you did?

After all, you just need to carry over the profile from the desktop. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Move_to_a_new_PC

Thanks for reply.

I think I may have caused chaos in transferring/renaming profiles! I should learn that computers and grey hair are incompatible and I am able to b***ls up the simplest directions!

Specifically:-

I located TB profile on PC by entering %AppData%\Thunderbird|profiles\ and copies to USB stick.

Downloaded TB on new laptop via Mozilla website

Located profile on laptop as above and renamed it as .old

Copied profile from PC to laptop so that both .old and .default were present

Deleted .old

Started TB by clicking on icon

Get message saying "your TB profile cannot be loaded - it may be missing or inaccessible"

Checked the profiles, and the Thunderbird profiles on both the PC and the newly loaded laptop are identical

I have tried deleting TB completely and re-downloading it, but get same result.

Any (simple) suggestions greatly appreciated.

Richard

I suspect your profiles.ini is where the problem lies. You have either copied too much or too little.

Have you tried using the profile manager to re-marry Thunderbird and its profile? This would (hopefully) bring profiles.ini into step with your transferred profile.

Thanks. I suspect that you are correct, but I am ashamed to say that having clicked on the link you kindly provided, I find that the contents are beyond the capability of "my little grey cells". Afraid I don't understand that if TB is working perfectly on my PC, it doesn't work on the laptop when the profiles are identical. Also if there was a problem with how I originally modified TB after initially installing it on the lap top, this should have been rectified when I deleted TB from the laptop and reinstalled from scratch.

Remove Thunderbird Type %appdata% in to the start menu and press enter. Locate the Thunderbird folder and delete it.

Now that is "scratch" uninstall does not remove your data, and Nor should it.

Sorry, Tried to follow instructions, but ended up in the same place. The profile for TB on both PC, where the original TB is installed, and the laptop, with newly loaded TB is identical. Clicking the TB icon still says profile cannot be loaded
