There aren't any built-in so far as I know. Read this article for information about an add-on that does the job, plus some relevant background information: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Add_emoticons I see there's also an add-on to add 'emojis' -- but I don't know if they are the same as emoticons? (I'm from a different generation altogether!) To get add-ons and to search for more use the add-ons manager from the Thunderbird menu.
