I have been using Thunderbird with my hotmail account without any problem. I have not done anything new but today, the hotmail account could not sync and it kept asking me to enter the correct password. I did but it kept asking me again. So I removed the hotmail account from Thunderbird and then try to add it again. At the Mail Account Setup screen, I could not set it up and got this error message "Configuration could not be verified - is the username or password wrong?". I am 100% sure that the password is correct. I have chosen IMAP (remote folders) and have used all the recommended "Incoming" and "Outgoing" settings. My hotmail 2 stage verification is turned off. Can someone help me please?

I also have a live.hk account on Thunderbird and it continues to work without any problem.

See my closed issue. It was an MS issue, they borked a platform migration, causing grief to several thousand hotmail/outlook.com users who accessed their mail accounts via IMAP.

If you are 100% sure that your Hotmail/Outlook.com e-mail server settings are correct, then I suggest turning on Two-step verification, setup an App Password for Thunderbird, and test that.

Very strange. Everything is fine today. I have not done a thing different. I have entered exactly the same password.

That's Microsoft for you.
