Upon opening Thunderbird I see the main page: Email, Accounts, Advanced Features. No reference to address book here. Under Email I select "write a new message" No address book available. Everything else seems OK ie Inbox, Drafts, Sent Mail, All Mail etc., and my created folders.

If you are talking about the Contact Sidebar in a Write window pressing F9 toggles it on and off.

BTW I am on an IMac El Capitan if that matters. From a write window I pressed F9 and saw only spelling, attach, security, and save.

I should mention that yesterday my computer locked up while on Thunderbird. I lost all control. All I could do was shut the power off. When I rebooted everything seemed OK. However this is my first attempt to access contacts. Maybe this is how I lost it.

My only account is Gmail and my contacts appear OK there. I've had issues in the past importing from there.

If I reinstalled Thunderbird would I lose all my settings? Please suggest best way forward. Thanks
