After "upgrading" to Firefox Quantum most of my RSS feeds/live bookmarks fail to update. The links work and even creating a new live bookmark on the page fails to load. For example Cyanide & Happiness (http://explosm.net/) does not update but Lucid's Dream (http://lucidsdream.webcomic.ws/) does. How can I fix this?

Still doesn't seem to be loading. :/

Next I want you to try to run Firefox in Safe Mode. Follow the instructions in this link. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode

After you restart Firefox in safe mode try to do the normal RSS updates and let me know how it goes.

Restarting in safe mode had everything working. Though that stopped when I enabled add-ons again. It looks like the RSS is failing because of something to do with the NoScript add-on so I guess I'll be fiddling around with those settings. Thank you.

The NoScript add-on

I was using NoScript add-on myself until Firefox 57 was introduced. It was supposed to be a safer way to surf the net because it only allowed "... JavaScript, Java and other executable content to run only from trusted domains." That sounded great because folks were scared several years ago that unscrupulous providers were running apps that could expose you to security threats.

Up to the introduction of Firefox 52 XUL and SDK plug-ins provided some feature rich enhancements to the Firefox experience. Unfortunately some of them became security risks. The NoScript developers wanted to minimize the security holes so you could decide to selectively allow some of these apps to run.

Over the past few years, Firefox has worked hard to build replacements for these plugins. Together, they are called Web APIs. They are designed to replace the function of these plugins without undermining your internet security, stability and performance.

As of Firefox 57 only add-ons that comply with the Web API standards are allowed to run. The only exception is Adobe FLash. But note that Adobe Flash is being phased out and will not run at all after the end of 2020.

So you need to decide. Remove NoScript add-on because Firefox is now inherently more secure. This is what I have done.

If you want to continue to use NoScript MAKE SURE you get the update from this website (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/noscript/) and MAKE SURE it is 10.1.2 or later. If you decide to try that and it doesn't work with RSS then I will just remove it and move on and enjoy Firefox!

Even if Firefox is more secure it is still letting websites run lots of unnecessary things. Such as various trackers and stuff which is unnecessary for the website to work.

Maybe things will be more secure if Flash is also disabled but then how will you run all the things which are running Flash. Firefox has steadily become less and less customisable and less user friendly. For example, we used to be able to set Firefox to ask whether we wanted to enable cookies every time a site tried to set one. Then, without any warning, that setting was removed and now we either accept all cookies or none or manually change the settings one by one after the fact. That was completely unnecessary.

I agree how to personalize Firefox has changed recently. The menus have a new look. For a start let's look at the enable cookie question as it stands with Firefox 57.

• Tools->Options->Privacy & Security-> History
• "Firefox will" - choose from drop down menu "Use Custom Settings for History"
• The menu that I have a screen capture for appears. You have a lot of variability of how you want to use cookies. If you click to "Accept Cookies from Websites" you can then decide to accept third party cookies "Always" "From Visited" or "Never." You can also say "Keep Until" "they expire" or "when I close Firefox"

So this should help you customize cookie process.

Flash

For the Flash process MAKE SURE you are running the latest version. Previously we listed uninstall Flash 26.0 r0 as is a big security issue and install Flash Player Version: 27.0.0.187 Current Version. Firefox is working with the browser community to port websites away from Flash. Until its total phase out in 2021 Firefox desktop will continue to support Flash Player 27.0.0.187.

Tracking Issues

I must say I doubt Firefox's commitment to tracking protection since they switched to Google as their default search engine. Yes, it is the best and I still sometimes use it but Google is also probably the most guilty company of tracking users.
