when I check the box, in Options, to save passwords and close firefox, when I reopen firefox the save passwords box is unchecked. I have turned off and also uninstalled bitdefender and the save passwords option is still not retained when I restart Firefox v57

I checked your premise that roboform was causing the problem and you might be right. I removed the roboform add-on to firefox and firefox DID remember that I checked the "Save Passwords" box. So I submitted a ticket to roboform about this

THANKS

This is possibly a problem with the RoboForm Password Manager extension. We have recently seen more reports about this issue. You can try to contact RoboForm for support.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window
