How do I import my AOL address book to Thunderbird
Breaking ties with AOL.
How do I IMPORT my AOL address book to Thunderbird?
How do I later switch from the AOL base to, say, GMAIL base? Or do I not need a home base??

Log in to your AOL account on the website, select Contacts, then More/Export, choose LDIF format. Once the contacts.ldif file is saved to your computer, in TB select Tools/Import...Address books...Text file...select the LDIF file. Open Address Book to see the imported contacts.
Not sure what you mean by switching 'from the AOL base'. If you have a gmail account, it can be added to TB via File/New/Existing Mail Account.
