In the installation instructions for additional language packages it appears that one needs to go into settings to switch languages? Is it possible to simply have 2 languages, and either a way to specify as typing, or auto-recognition? Spanish has characters that English does not, as well as putting question or exclamation marks upside down at the start of the sentence, not just at the end as in English. Native to Mozilla would seem the best solution to work over multiple sites and apps accessed over the Internet.

Sorry no. You need to download a Dictionary for Spanish to be able to spell check : https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/language-tools/

You would have to switch the keyboard layout in the OS if you want too type characters that aren't available on your standard keyboard.

Language packs is for changing the language of the UI or user Interface of the menus and such and not for websites viewed in Firefox. The Dictionaries are what are using for the spell checker language.

If you install from https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/language-tools/ then there is a description of what each are at top.

Installing a dictionary add-on will add a new language option to your Firefox spell-checker, which checks your spelling when you fill out Web forms. Language pack add-ons change the language of the entire application.
