This is my solution for Windows Firefox 67.0.4 without installing anything! Thanks Mozilla for making this!!

Under Hamburger Menu (on the top right)>options>scroll down to Language and Appearance>colors

Choose your background color, font color, hyperlink colors

Select from the drop down menu: Override the colors specified by the page with your selections above

ALWAYS

and voila!

dark mode and privacy in one! Works practically everywhere!  :D All images look good. (one site had their dropdown menu bkg hardcoded as white)

TIPS: I chose a softer black to reduce glare. I found I had to dial down the intensity of my hyperlink colors as well.

Best wishes all!

Hi Terrain, I think you will need an add-on or style rule modification. It sounds as though the Dark Reader extension meets most of your needs. What do you mean by "firefox protected websites" where it doesn't work?

Like this website, addons site, etc

On chrome dark themes affected those sites but it seems i’m stuck with light mode in firefox for these sites, i also said i already use darkreader and that does work for sites such as youtube, wikipedia and other sites unrelated to firefox (yes i know youtube has native dark theme) but sites like this very one, and pretty much the whole mozilla.org domain are protected somehow by firefox, meaning no extensions can modify them only themes (hopefully)

Yes, there is a list of sites that extensions are not allowed to modify. The purpose is to prevent bad extensions from modifying those pages in a misleading way or stealing data from them. You actually can unprotect one or more of those sites by editing a preference. I have only done that for this support site (because it helps me be more efficient in answering questions); other people might take more risk.

To see where this setting is:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste restr and pause while the list is filtered

(3) The extensions.webextensions.restrictedDomains preference lists the sites where extensions are not able to inject into or extract from the page.

Unfortunately, this is not a per-extension restriction. Once you open a site up, any extension with permission to access the page has free rein.

As an alternate way to dark theme Firefox, you could check out ShadowFox, which applies custom style sheets to Firefox. It is more complicated to set up, but can handle Mozilla sites and internal pages as well.

Omg thank you shadowfox from your description is exactly what i need, if it isn’t the unprotect thingy will definetly work fine with darkreader

I do not get the ALWAYS option in overriding colors, only a choice between high definition or non high definition, so useless.

Hi geraa48, mine looks like this in Firefox 68 on Windows -- yours is different?

Actually, it looks from your separate thread that you were able to solve this: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1261970

1) The reason most of the "themes" made by users lack coloring for NewTabPage (NTP) is because they most likely used Firefox's Color Extension.

2) To get the the other minor sections follow this instructions: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Add-ons/WebExtensions/manifest.json/theme

3) I did mine already, but noticed I couldn't change the about:preferences & about:debugging pages. Hence, why I'm here.

4) I did some search and found out that there's a Dark Mode for the Add-Ons Manager and about:about pages. Here's the page I got the info from: https://techdows.com/2019/04/firefox-options-add-ons-manager-receive-windows-10-dark-mode-support.html

5) We need to toggle: browser.in-content.dark-mode to “true” It works but I'd like to change the colors of my choosing.

6) I'm gonna try ShadowFox and see what happens..

GO TO SETTINGS, WINDOWS, where you set your background, and themes, and desktop picture etc., it has a DARK choice for apps.
