How do I access Thunderbird message content that no longer displays when I click on an inbox entry?

I no longer see the message content after clicking on a Thunderbird inbox entry. I can see the message by clicking [Control plus O], but that's cumbersome and the message is littered with (at least to me) extraneous info. How can I get back to 'normal'?

Did you hide the Message Pane? Press F8 in the main window.

Also, set View/Headers to Normal; press Alt if the Menu Bar is hidden.
