TRied to change my signature and now get a huge page of gobblegook and can't get back to accouint seetings!

I wanted to make my signature more attractive than just regular font. so I tried making it is WORD and telling Thunderbird to go get that file. However, what I now get is a huge page of diamonds and questions marks and other crap / the signature has disappeared, and worse, I can't get back to Account settings in any meaningful fashion. If I clink on account settings, instead of showing me all the other stuff it used to, there is one line that says IMAP and nothing else - no choices / just OK or cancel. Help! I am suddenly having to delete a page of garbage to try and send an email!! What on earth did I do wrong?? I need halop !
