I would like to be able to backup my email messages to a USB drive periodically so that I can delete these messages from the computer, yet still be able to find a message and restore it if needed

I would also like to have a backup of my address book that could be restored if necessary.

For contacts, you can export them via the Tools menu > Export in the Address Book window. Several output formats are supported.
