on today screen, there is more width than height, so it's more readable to have a "left to right stacking" instead of "top down" on thunderbid it seems that the stacking is "left to right" for the folder tree view and calendar, but "top down" for the email thread view and message display. I want to have the tread view displayed at right of message, so that I can read the message without scrolling.... eg : folder | threads | message display | calendar instead of

          | thread |

folder | --------------------------- | calendar

          | message |

how can I do that?

ok I found, the menu isn't displayed by default, I had to right click on the right part of the tab area, outside a tab, and check "display menu" once I have the menu, I can change the layout as desired...

=> the menu should be displayed by default

Try View/Layout/Vertical View.
