When I open explorer to view files, the .htm and .html files appear with the unassigned blank square icon even though I have set these file extensions to open default with firefox. They still open in firefox but they don't display the firefox icon in explorer. I have tried re-assigning them to other browsers and then back to firefox and still a blank icon. I have also tried the unhide and delete icon cache options as well. Please help.

Hey,

Yesterday I noticed I started to have this problem after I did a registry clean,
and so I came online searching for answers. I came up blank, nothing online had
the solution. So I tried finding out myself, and now the right icon appears.

In order to get the icon back to normal you must:

  1. - Make an HTML file somewhere.
  2. - Right click on it and mouse over "Send to" then click "Desktop (create shortcut)"
  3. - Now go to the desktop and right click on the shortcut and click "Properties".
  4. - Go to the "Shortcut" tab in the properties window.
  5. - Near the bottom of the window click "Change icon..."
  6. - Now it should say something like could not find file at Drive:/Program Files/Mozilla Firefox/firefox.exe
  7. - Now where my example says drive it will display a letter. Whatever letter that is is probably not where you have Firefox installed.
  8. - In my case the drive it said was C and I have Firefox installed on my E drive.
  9. - Go to the drive it said and make a "Program Files" folder.
  10. - Inside of the "Program Files" folder, make a folder named "Mozilla Firefox".
  11. - Copy firefox.exe from the drive on which it is installed and then paste it in the "Mozilla Firefox" folder THAT YOU MADE.
  12. - Refresh the desktop and the icon should appear!
Please let me know if this works for you and if not then I will try to help you further.

Do not thank me, thank the Lord. He showed me.
                Gabe

I did this and it didn't work. Seems like it's a Firefox 4 problem as I didn't have issue before.
