Use an underscore _ or a hyphen - instead of a space. Or use quotes around the file name when you save it.

Thanks for trying to help. Maybe i did not specific my issue clear enough, each time when i try to download a file from my university elearning site. The filenames suggested by firefox automatically change space char to %20. I need to manually remove those %20 to space char again when i save the file, this is really not convenient. I tried on Chrome and IE, both of them do not have this problem with the same file.

Are you copying the name from the location bar or do you see that %20 if you use the right-click context menu "Save Link as" or if left clicking a link?

If you copy the name from the location bar then you get a %20. In such cases you can add a dummy character (= or -) to the far left of the URL and copying the remainder of the text.

no, i am not copying the name. I just click on the link directly to download the file, this had work fine with IE and Chrome. Only Firefox give me this problem (same file).

So if you download the Firefox program (Firefox 3.6.16.dmg) you get a %20 in the file name?

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

  • Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

um..... interesting. i do not have problem on the link you provided. The site that i had this issues is my university black board download for the zip file that the prof provided. The strange part is, it work fine with Chrome and IE, only firefox had issues. Sorry that i did not test on other site first before posting this.

I am thinking it might have some things to do with the site implementation. However, i pretty sure the blackboard system did not build to support or tested with Chrome because more than likely it is developed before Chrome is introduced. Um..... any idea where can go wrong? thanks for your prompt reply.

Funny you should mention that you are having this problem from your university elearning site...same here. I think this is a problem with the Blackboard software (the software company for a lot of university elearning sites). I also verified that Firefox had no trouble downloading a file with spaces in the file name from one of my personal websites (I uploaded a test file with a space in the file name, and downloaded it from Firefox, and Firefox did not insert "%20"). Maybe we should file a bug with Blackboard (however you do that).
