Why do some images load in the same tab?

When I click on an image it loads as expected in a new tab, but then when I click on a second image to load, even if the image is stored on a completely different website, it will load onto the same tab that the old image loaded onto, overwriting it, instead of loading onto another new tab. This has only been a recent problem as images always used to load onto their own individual tabs, but strangely it doesn't happen on every image I try to load. Earlier today I loaded one image from imagevenue.com on a new tab, but then when I clicked on a separate image stored on imagebam.com it loaded onto the same tab instead of another new tab.

I am using FF 3.6.15 and have checked the box "Open new windows in new tabs instead".

That happens if the link specifies a target window. Then all those links open in that same tab or window. If it is a normal link (not JavaScript window.open() type) then you can middle click the link to open each image in a new tab.
