One of my favorite features in Firefox was the ability to drag a url from the address bar right into my folders on the bookmarks toolbar. The folders would even spring load like Finder, so I could put urls in subfolders. This has become the foundation of how I do all my research! Now in Firefox 4 I can't do this. I don't want to command-D and navigate to the right search folder every time I want to bookmark. I want to drag & drop! Where did this awesome functionality go?

Drag the icon on the left end of the URL/Location/Address bar to the folder(s) on your Bookmarks Toolbar.

Thank you!!! This is even easier now, of course, no need to highlight the url.

You are welcome.

So that other users can find answers that have worked, please take a couple of minutes to return to the forum, sign in and click "Solved" next to my answer if that solved your problem. Thanks.

I have no "folders" on my bookmark toolbar, so huh?

Oddly occasionally when I drag the icon onto the icon onto the bookmars toolbar, it works, but most of the time it does not work, often it simply opens a new tab with the same addy that the existing tab I grabbed the icon from. It makes no difference if I put tabs on top or bottom.

Interestingly I have another xp computer using 4.0 and drag and drop does work there fine, I just checked.

On this computer, which I downloaded firefox 4.0 two days ago, running the same exact xp sysmem (I'm transferring to a newer computer) will not drag and drop. After dragging and dropping half a dozen icons, this started, now none will drag and drop.

I was really looking forward to organizing using stylish and multirow bookmarks to be able to scan the different currency indexes, and various stock that I watch.

Any other suggestions please?

Thanks

Very Frustrated.

Just upgraded to Firefox 4. Drag and drop bookmarks into folders no longer working properly. Solution from Helper7677, is what I have been doing, but generally won't work. Though strangely it will randomly work. It was all good before upgrade. Any suggestions?

I went back to an older version of Firefox (3.5) and I can't drag bookmarks using that version either. As others have said, it works on occasion (seldom) but most of the time nothing happens or it goes somewhere it shouldn't and messes up my other bookmarks. PLEASE FIX!

@carolsue

Please start a new thread for your problem or question instead of posting in multiple threads.

Then you can provide troubleshooting information like your operating system and installed extensions () and installed plugins () and we will be better able to help you.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Another possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

On my PC (Firefox 6.0.2 on Ubuntu Linux) it was caused by the Delicious Extension.

I had this aggravating problem with bookmark functionality as well. For me it was torbutton 1.4.5 and firefox 8.0

disable torbutton

Cheers

I have read that there are about 5 or 6 other add-ons that also inhibit Drag and Drop functionality, not just the Torbutton and Delicious add-ons. The list is somewhere in the main Firefox support section (but it's tough to find the answer there twice).

The generic add-on troubleshooting page is at:
