An unsolicited add on called General Crawler 2.0 has suddenly appeared. Standard Firefox advice has not worked, nor has uninstalling Firefox and re-installing. When you uninstall it justs keeps coming back. If you disable it it stays there but you can't tell if the disable is genuine.

Well, you need to update the firefox then go to add-on manager and delete General Crawler.

More information: The operating system is Windows 7 and the add on appeared either just before, during or immediately after updating to version 3.6.16

On a Windows XP computer updating resulted in another add on appearing instead - with the same behaviour. Freeze.com NetAssistant 3.6.5

Is there a hole in 3.6.16 which crawlers are taking advantage of?

Found it from:

user/appdata/roaming/mozilla/extensions/{ec8030f7-c20a-464f-9b0e-13a3a9e97384} (string might be different)

Delete the gencrawler@some.com folder or whatever it is for you.

Hope it helps anyone who finds this.

Thanks Jiiks That worked fine.

I hate things on my PC that I have not installed and moreso that will not uninstal when asked.

Although I stopped it before I said to activate it, I could not remove the grayed out link. This bothered me. I also have three profiles that the d@med thing showed up in.

Your FIX was SPOT-ON!!!

I removed the whole folder and it was gone from all three profiles!

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You !

( Now if you can only help me with installing a scanner from windows 2000 on a windows 7 machine.... OOPS, Wrong Forum! )

I have win XP and just ran malware bytes and it found it and removed it. Flagged it as a trojan.

I found this article really useful when removing media finder or gencrawler, whatever it's called.

It has a command you enter into the prompt after you remove it because I guess it can install again if you simply remove it. That other command prompt in the other comment is not close to complete, there's more to it.

Anyways, check it out, I hope it helps.
