Before your reply, I did a Firefox sync between my old and new computers, and achieved what I wanted... bookmarks, cookies, etc. copied to my new computer. At least, it seems everything is working good. Time will tell.

Now, I need to learn more about the 'sync' process because I don't want these two computers to sync on an ongoing basis.

Thanks for the reply.

If you are upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7 you might have a problem losing all your bookmarks, passwords, history, etc. If you have that problem here is what you need to do:

1. Make it so that you can view hidden files. Go to Control Panel, Appearance and Personalization, and under Folder Options click "Show hidden files and folders." The Folders Options box should appear. Click on the button that says "Show hidden files, folders, and drives.

2. Find your original profile that has all your data from Firefox. In your old Windows XP system the path is (name of drive):\Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

It will be something like "sdfajkl.default" Rename it to "my profile"

Then copy the file

3. Find your new, probably mostly blank, profile in Windows 7. The path will be C:\Users\(user name)\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

Paste your old profile in that folder so that it is there next to the new one.

At some point, probably now, you'll need to exit Firefox.

Copy the name of the new profile, then delete the new profile. Replace the name of the original profile "my profile" with the name of the new profile that you just deleted.

At this point when you open Firefox it should have all your bookmarks and settings the way it used to be.

If you try to start Firefox and it tells you Firefox is already running, delete profiles.ini, restart Firefox, it will create another profile and "profiles.ini", close Firefox, use the name of the new profile that it created for your real profile, delete any of those new profiles that are still there, and hopefully it will work when you start it up again.
