So did the address sent to you begin with picasa://? If it did, it is invalid, if you send us the url (get rid of the last few letters/numbers/symbols if you want to keep private) I will correct it for you.

http://picasa.google.com/ is the correct address.
I had no problems downloading the album in windows so my problem is effectively fixed. Picasa must be open to allow download to take place.
However I did come across a web site on how to install picasa in ubuntu but have not done so as yet, but may be of interest
