I am novice at computers and downloaded a AVG for virus protection on a free trial and AVG became my sever page. I may have done this by mistake and wish to return to Firefox as my start page and get rid of the expired AVG service.

Ok, let's run through this here.

First, to reset your search engine, simply install the addon at this link: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/searchreset/. It should reset your search engine from AVG to Google (the Firefox Default).

Now, AVG may have done some other things to mess with your home page and add-ons. I would recommend uninstalling AVG if you haven't already. http://www.avg.com/ww-en/faq.num-4416 explains how.

Then, if AVG changed your home page, you can read How to set the home page to learn how to set it back to what is was before.

Finally, in your address bar, type in "about:addons" (without the quotes) and press Enter. then Click Extensions. Disable or Remove all the AVG extensions listed there (and any others you don't want). Restart Firefox.

Now you don't want to run your computer without Anti-virus, so if you haven't gotten another one, I would recommend downloading and Installing Microsoft Security Essentials http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials. I personally recommend MSE as an awesome personal anti-virus program, and the great thing, it's free! Now you only want to have one anti-virus at a time on your PC, so if you have multiple ones, decide which one you want to keep and remove the others.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
