What do I have to do to get unicode chess characters to display correctly.

This page: http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/2659/browsertest.htm shows me the unicode values in small boxes. none of the fonts from the 'local font list' show the character correctly.

You need a font that supports these symbols.

Firefox uses the Free Serif font on my computer to display the chess symbols.

Yes. The obvious answer is that I need a font that supports these characters.

Your links to background information are informative, but what I need is: 1) a link to a font to install that (once installed) will successfully display the page I supplied the link to, and 2) information about any settings I have to change to allow similar pages to successfully display the example character automatically

Thanks for helping.
