why am I suddenly getting ads in a new window
when I go to some sites, another window opens up with an ad, and sometime when I click on a link, it redirects me to an ad page instead. What's up with this?

Links can indicate where they are to be opened, I trust you really don't care about that and want to suppress the ad. Take a look at https://support.mozilla.com/questions/903098 for how to block ads. You may have to tweak filters, but the chances are pretty good that the filters that you subscribe to will take care of the problem.
