Your "Change the fonts and colors..." Instruction says "click on (3 horizontal bars) and chose "options" (In a box) ... can't do as no such box is displayed.
Because of vision problems long ago I changed the background color to post it yellow as stark white hurts. The old color choice system was fairly easy to modify and once in a whike I let the site colors work as some things were concealed using my colors.
Several months ago a Firefox upgrade tossed all the learned access and now I cannot for the life of me figure it out. I am no longer able to effect any color selections. Clicking on the GEAR does show content but everything is yellow and nothing allows changes.
Some upgrade???

Adding a complex patch to fix a simple feature seems like gilding the lily. Firefox please return the simple check box to switch colors.
Hi John, here on the support forum, we work with the version of Firefox we have today. You can submit feature change suggestions for future versions of Firefox here:

It took many years for Firefox to get full support for users of High Contrast themes, so I don't expect that choice to be removed. However, if you think it could be made easier for everyone to understand, please feel free to use the input site to suggest a different way to set up the selection.

The label Options disappears from below the gear icon if you move it to the toolbar. Maybe that's what happened. But as for the problem with the Options page itself:
Firefox 38 moved from the old pop-up style dialog to a page that opens in a tab. Some issues like this problem of not being able to see colors in certain situations, have not yet been resolved.
For now, you might find it easiest to return to the old style Options dialog:
(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste pref and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the browser.preferences.inContent preference to switch it from true to false
Does that work?
Note: I don't know whether that will be in Firefox forever or is a transitional feature. As you've probably noticed, the long-term trend is to remove things that pop up.
Well ... I got back the former pop-up dialog box except the check box controlling the use of site colors is missing.
I have a soft yellow color that sometimes concealed features or buttons on sites such as amazon and ebay. By clicking on the gear and selecting content and colors ... I was presented with a single check box something like "allow sites to use original colors.
That worked fine for me. Whoosh it's gone???
You now have an "Override the colors specified by the page with my selections above" setting with three choices.
- Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Colors :
"Override the colors specified by the page with my selections above": (Never; Always; Only with High Contrast themes)
You can use the NoSquint extension to set font size (text/page zoom) and text color on web pages.

(Never; Always; Only with High Contrast themes) ... provides no answer.
There is usually no need to change the color settings and disabling the website colors disables background images, so you can get problems with elements like buttons that are solely a background image.
Best is to look at the above mentioned NoSquint extension.
