How do I get messages opened in a new tab to load in the background, and remain loaded when not focused?

When I choose to load a message in a new tab, it only actually starts loading when I select that tab. Messages also appear to be unloaded when no longer in focus, and the reloaded when selected again. I want tabs to load immediately, and not unload until closed. I want to change this behavior to do what I'm asking for every time. No hotkey suggestions, please.

As Thunderbird really only has one tab and everything else is smoke and mirrors, your observations could well be correct.

But really what does it matter? It looks like multiple tabs.
