my mail is being forwarded to a gmail account and i cannot find out why, please advise me.

I can think of two places to look.

  1. Your main email account's server may be set to forward messages.
  2. Thunderbird may be set to Cc: to the gmail address - look in Tools|Account|Settings, select the account and check Copies & Folders.
