I copied a TB profile when backing up some years ago (I know this isn't the correct method). I need to open the "Sent" mail file in the profile. This file is listed as "file" under "Type." What program do I use to open this file?

You can open the Sent file in a text editor which is not very comfortable. If you want to read and see all messages with their contents Thunderbird is the best choice!

That Sent file is an mbox file. Help/Troubleshooting Info, Profile Folder, Open Folder, close TB, copy Sent into Mail/Local Folders, renaming it if necessary, restart TB, find the folder under Local Folders in the Folder Pane.

As suggested, the text editor solution basically yields garbage. The second works albeit somewhat unusually ( it renamed my renamed file).
