I am setting up Thunderbird for the first time. Do I need to have Mozilla and Firefox set up first or is that irrelevant? I keep getting "unable to log in" messages and cannot go any further in the Thunderbird set up.

Which is your email provider? If they publish the settings needed to configure the mail client (most of them do) and you post a screenshot of the server settings you're trying to use, we may check whether you're properly setting up the account in Thunderbird. You don't need to have Firefox nor a Mozilla account.
