Running an Intel i7-3630QM 2.4GHZ 8gb ram Windows 7.

Firefox used to run quickly but has slowed down a lot recently inexplicably (no new apps were installed or anything unusual when this slowdown began.

I've tried changing my max connections per web server through the [about:config] option, and that has helped a bit, but videos still load slowly and pages are still lagging.

Connecting to an online game is fine, with perfect connectivity (no latency problems).

I've tried clearing my cache and doing the "reset firefox" in the help menu, that has not helped.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

Thank you for your reply.

I use AVG Int Security 2013 and Windows Firewall.

I went into Windows Firewall w/ Advanced security. There were no rules for Firefox so I added Firefox to the list of programs that could communicate through the firewall. I then let it determine its own rules for Firefox (which it did not tell me). I also started Firefox in Safe Mode with Default Appearance as suggested. The problem still persists. I should add that I previously tried completely disabling my firewalls. (Unsuccessful). I also installed enum plus to see the possible security programs that may have been blocking firefox. This problem is across all browsers.

What do I do now?

Hello, any luck if you boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) ?

(If works in Windows Safe mode then probably you have problem with other software, like security software or maybe a system driver, that is running on your computer).

thank you

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
