Why am I constantly being asked for my Yahoo mail account even though I have set Password Manager to remember the password?

Before I used TB, I had Yahoo Second Sign-In Verification enabled on my Yahoo Mail account. However, that feature didn't play well with most apps (even with App Passwords set up in Yahoo). Once I started using TB (only a month ago) the problem with Second Sign-In continued and I finally disabled the service.
Since doing so TB continues to ask me for my password when sending mail. It doesn't happen all the time but happens several times a day. When sending mail, the SMTP Server Password Required dialog box will appear. Each time I enter my correct password, click the "Use Password Manager" check box, and click OK. The email sends and I go about my day until it happens again in a few hours.
I have checked and the password appears to be being saved in the Password Manager. It does not ask me for the password when I open TB. It asks at random times. I have found no pattern to determine why it is asking me to enter the password.
I did try manually deleting the password entry in Password Manager (just trying things out) and I was not asked for a password again until I closed and re-opened the program. And the a few hours later I was asked again.

just a guess.
turn off any password "vault" type component in your anti virus and disable email scanning. Do it one at a time and see if that is the cause.

I am only using MS Security Essentials and am not aware of any password vault.
Disable email scanning where? In the anti-virus software? I do not have any email scanning enabled in MS Security Essentials. I think that Yahoo only scans attachments when you download them through the web interface not when accessing the account through an email client. I could be wrong about that but I've never seen any ability to disable email scanning in yahoo. I just double checked.
Well, tonight, for the first time I decided to hit the "Retry" button instead of entering my password. I hit the button once to no avail but the second time it went through. So I'm guessing the problem is on the yahoo server side (which honestly doesn't surprise me). I will continue to see what happens with this situation and post again. If the Retry button keeps working I will chalk it up to Yahoo and close out the post.

If you changed your password and told Thunderbird to store the new one, it will have both the old and new passwords in its store and won't know which one to use, so it asks you.
Tools|Options|Security|Passwords->Saved Passwords and delete all instances of any defunct password.
I immediately went to the Password Manager and there has never been more than one entry for smtp.mail.yahoo.com. I also deleted the entry that was there for smtp.mail.yahoo.com.
I am seeing the exact same thing with Outlook.com when I start Thunderbird. I had just assumed that it was refusing the connection because this IP address was already connected to get mail from another account. It only happens the once and only after a restart of Thunderbird
